Frequently asked questions

In the United Kingdom, physiotherapists play a crucial role in providing acupuncture and dry needling as part of their standard practice. Physiotherapists wishing to provide this service are required to undergo CPD training to ensure they meet the HCPC's standards and competency requirements, such as our Medical Acupuncture & Dry Needling Foundation Course.

Such programmes equip physiotherapists with the necessary knowledge and skills to safely and effectively administer acupuncture and dry needling as part of their physiotherapy practice. This recognition and training has established physiotherapists as the leading healthcare profession in the UK for the provision of acupuncture and dry needling services.

Medical acupuncture and dry needling can serve as valuable complements to physiotherapy, offering a multifaceted approach to rehabilitation and pain management. Physiotherapy primarily focuses on the physical aspects of recovery, such as muscle strengthening and joint mobility, while acupuncture and dry needling provide targeted interventions to address pain, muscle tension, and promote healing. When integrated effectively, these modalities can result in a synergistic effect that benefits patients in various ways.

One of the primary benefits of combining acupuncture and dry needling with physiotherapy is enhanced pain relief. Acupuncture targets specific acupoints to stimulate the body's natural pain-killing mechanisms and promote relaxation, which can help alleviate pain and muscle tension. Dry needling, on the other hand, targets trigger points within muscles, releasing tension and promoting blood flow to the affected area. Together, these techniques can provide more immediate and lasting relief, allowing patients to participate more fully in their physiotherapy exercises and rehabilitative activities.

Additionally, acupuncture and dry needling can help expedite the healing process. By improving blood circulation and promoting the body's natural healing mechanisms, these modalities can accelerate tissue repair and recovery. This means that the combination of physiotherapy with acupuncture and dry needling can potentially lead to faster recovery times and better outcomes for patients dealing with a wide range of musculoskeletal issues, such as sports injuries, chronic pain, or post-surgery rehabilitation. The holistic approach that combines the strengths of each approach ensures a more well-rounded and effective treatment plan that addresses not only the physical aspects of recovery but also considers the patient's overall well-being.

In summary, the integration of acupuncture and dry needling with physiotherapy provides a comprehensive approach to rehabilitation and pain management. Together, they enhance pain relief, expedite the healing process, and contribute to a more effective and well-rounded treatment plan for patients seeking to recover from musculoskeletal issues and injuries. This complementary approach can lead to improved patient outcomes and a better quality of life.

Typically, our foundation level acupuncture and dry needling course take physiotherapists around one to two months to complete. The online component of our course can be completed in your own time, at your own pace, whilst the in-person workshop is conducted across three days.

Following the foundation course, physiotherapists may decide to advance their training further through one of our online or in-person CPD training courses. Our popular Advanced Skills in Acupuncture Course comprises an online component, as well as a two day in-person training event.

Yes, dry needling is often considered a part of physiotherapy, and it is frequently used by physiotherapists as one of the techniques in their scope of practice. Dry needling involves the insertion of thin needles into trigger points in muscles, tendons, or ligaments to release muscle tension, alleviate pain, and promote healing. It is particularly effective for treating musculoskeletal conditions, such as myofascial pain, sports injuries, and chronic pain.

Dry needling is often used in conjunction with other physiotherapy interventions, such as manual therapy, exercise, and patient education, to provide a comprehensive approach to patient care.

Yes, physiotherapy and acupuncture can work together effectively to provide comprehensive care for patients, especially for musculoskeletal and pain-related conditions. The combination of these two complementary therapies can offer several benefits:

  1. Holistic Approach: Physiotherapy focuses on physical rehabilitation and improving mobility, strength, and function. Acupuncture, on the other hand, targets specific points to promote healing, alleviate pain, and relax muscles. Together, they provide a more holistic approach that addresses both the physical and holistic aspects of health and recovery.

  2. Pain Management: Acupuncture is known for its effectiveness in pain management by stimulating the release of endorphins and improving blood circulation. This can help patients manage pain and discomfort, making it easier to participate in physiotherapy exercises and activities.

  3. Enhanced Recovery: The combination of acupuncture and physiotherapy can expedite the healing process. Acupuncture can improve blood flow and promote the body's natural healing mechanisms, potentially leading to faster recovery times and better outcomes for patients recovering from injuries or surgeries.

  4. Personalised Care: Combining physiotherapy and acupuncture allows healthcare providers to tailor treatment plans to the individual needs and goals of the patient. This personalised approach can result in better outcomes and patient satisfaction.

In sum, the integrated approach can lead to improved patient care, especially for those dealing with musculoskeletal issues and pain-related conditions.

It is becoming increasingly common for physiotherapists to embrace acupuncture as an integral part of their practice. This evolving trend highlights the recognition within the field of physiotherapy of the need to offer patients a more holistic approach to their care. By incorporating acupuncture, physiotherapists provide a diverse range of treatment options, particularly for pain management, rehabilitation, and overall well-being.

This growing integration of acupuncture reflects a shift towards more patient-centred and well-rounded musculoskeletal healthcare. Acupuncture serves as a valuable complement to traditional physiotherapeutic techniques, offering targeted pain relief, muscle relaxation, and expedited recovery. The combined use of both therapies fosters a more comprehensive approach to patient care, ultimately leading to improved patient outcomes and overall well-being. Physiotherapists are increasingly leveraging acupuncture to provide a distinct and effective approach to patient care, delivering a unique and multifaceted experience that addresses both physical and emotional aspects of health.
